1. Identify the corners and colors
Grasp the cube in any direction and try to estimate which color will be on the side in front of you. You have to find out what color all 4 corners share. All the corners on that face will have 3 colors, one color will appear on all 4 corners, this is the color of the face. Pull away to your right side and twist until both right corners have that color on the topmost side. Repeat the same moves on the left side, this will give you one completed side. Now erely push it together.
2. Unscrambled
Now, go again with the process. Grasp the unscrambled face on the left, which faces the left. Now, pull from the right-hand side, twist half of the cube so that the topmost face is totally unscrambled.
3. The three possible cases
The Gear puzzle has almost been solved. Move the first face which was unscrambled on the bottom layer and put the second face which was unscrambled at the backside. By now, you might have one or two scrambled cogs in front of you.
There are three possible cases now,
The big cog could be out of the rotation
Or the smaller cog or both, a big and a small cog which is out of the rotation.
4. Small Cog
If there is a small cog to be solved then you have to find out the direction in which the cog should travel in order to be in a perfect position. Decide that on your own, based on intuition. Calculate the number of teeth that the cog must be rotated by. A simple method to do it is to search for a tooth on the cog and calculate the number of teeth which stand before and where they should be placed, in an anti-clockwise fashion. It ought to be rotated one tooth anti-clockwise to be in its perfect place.
5. The 360-degree turn
Grasp the cube such that the corner to be solved is in the bottommost right corner belonging to the front face. Pull the cube away from the front side and perform the rotation spin in an anti-clockwise fashion till the cog has made a full roundabout rotation. so if the color blue is facing towards you, you will be required to spin the small cog with your hand until the blue color has come around again. That is a full three-sixty degrees rotation of the big corner. Pull the front face backward in and without twisting the cube and pull the Right face outwards – just like what we did with the Front face just then, and perform the EXACT same move.
6. Scrambled Gear Shift Puzzle
Your once scrambled Gear Shift puzzle should now look a bit more like a solved Gear Shift puzzle, hopefully. Now, put the right side face towards the back and pull apart the topmost face. Now perform, spin the front and move the right-hand anti-clockwise such that it makes one full rotation. Later, put the topmost face towards the bottom.
If you have done this, you will now have a perfectly solved Gear shift puzzle!
7. Big Cog
Follow these steps to solve 1 big cog.
This is a lot similar to solving the small corner with one big distinguishing feature.
To solve a big cog that is in the wrong direction, first figure out how many teeth should be moved and in what direction – take note if you are required to shift one or three teeth in any direction. This is called Unsolvable, go ahead, start from the beginning. After counting the number of teeth, you ought to rotate the corner piece by the number divided by two to calculate how many are required for the small corner up top to be rotated.
We then carry on in exactly the same manner as #4. Place the big corner that ought to be solved, in the bottom right side corner of the frontmost face and pull the frontmost face of the cube forward which separates the backside and front half. Rotate the big corner in whichever direction it has to go until the smaller corner above has rotated the amount of times that we figured out earlier on.
8. Combination of big and small cog
In case, you get the third case where the big and small cogs need to be solved, then go ahead and perform the above steps again. They will need to be done separately.
Congratulations, you have mastered another type of cube puzzle!
Happy Cubing!
